Hi everyone,
I have been taking methotrexate since Nov 08. I take 25 mg a week (ten 2.5mg tablets). My tablets are usually small, pale yellow with M 2.5mg scored on to them. I was about to take my weekly dose tonight and opened the bottle of mtx tablets which I have just had delivered by the chemist. The tablets are a brighter yellow, slightly larger and they do not have M or any dose scored into them. I havent taken them as I dont know if they are the right dose. Has anyone else had MTX without the dose scored into them?

I used to be on mtx and it did have the letters on there. If different the Chemist or Doc should have told you.
Good luck

Hi Lizzie,
Mine are pale yellow, in a blister pack but I have had them in a bottle and they are a darker yellow. I can't remember if there was anything scored on then. It might be advisable to either ring or go into the pharmacy before you take any, just to be safe.

PS if you look on the MIMS website it tells you the different makes and what they look like.

Whatever you do - DO NOT TAKE THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED WITH THE PHARMACIST ! I take mtx and take 20mg per week. But they are 10mg tablets which are oval in shape. My pharmacist told me that 2.5 mg are round and 10 mg are oval. So it is VERY important to check.

I too was slightly fazed by my Methotrexate tablets at the weekend. I had two different sorts one slightly larger than the other. I was assured they were both 2.5 mgs.
With regards to Ann's post, both my GP and pharmacist have told me that anything above 2.5mgs should have been withdrawn. They no longer issue above 2.5mgs as too many people were unintentionally overdosing on them.
As everyone else has said, best to check with your pharmacist if you are unsure.

I've had the slightly larger slightly more orangey ones before. They are just another manufacturer and should still be 2.5mg each.

I'm not sure, Ann, but it maybe wise to check with your surgery. As you take just 2 tablets it's probably Ok. Love Jeanxxxx

I've just started talking MTX. The nurse told me to check that they were 2.5mg. I told her that I had read somewhere that they now wasn't suppose to be given out so that there couldn't be any mistakes. She told me that one person had told her that her chemist had told her to cut a 10mg one in half.
I checked and checked mine before I took them.

Hi Lizzie,
I have had the same ones as you in the past and felt exactly as you have said. Are they the same, why are they different, I checked with the pharmacist and he said it was a different batch, it depends what they can get. I have never had them again always the yellow and white box since. Check to make sure yours are ok though I would. Lorna x

Anne x Hi Anne I take 2x10mg and 2x 2.5mg tablets a week. As far as I'm aware, its not banned, but it is frowned upon - there is a real danger of taking the wrong amounts and getting the tablets muddled up. I have to be very careful when taking them to make sure I'm taking the right ones. Agree with Jean - if you're worried, check with your doctor.

Hi I have also had the non marked ones and pharmacy assured me they were the 2.5 mg tabs, just a different manufacturer (they will be going with the cheapest!) I also still get the 10mg tabs as i pointed out to my gp practice, my hands are stiff and it is too damn difficult trying to count out 10 fiddly little round ones.
Hope that helps!

Methotrexate is the 'Gold Standard' medication for RA and everyone who can tolerate it, takes it, along with other medications. Without Mtx we would all be a lot worse than we are now. As with all medication, you should check that you are taking the right tablets and the right strengths.
